Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) is a world-leading specialist centre for paediatrics and one of the most renowned hospitals globally for the care of children and young people with rare and complex diseases. Founded in 1852 as the first hospital in the UK dedicated exclusively to inpatient care for children, GOSH has over 170 years of history at the forefront of paediatric medicine.
Today, with more than 5,000 staff, GOSH provides highly specialised care to hundreds of children daily, both within the NHS and through international and private care services. The hospital is widely recognised for its unique environment, designed to be a safe and welcoming “home-from-home” where children can receive treatment while continuing their education, play, and social development. Families are considered central members of the care team and are actively involved in all aspects of decision-making.
GOSH’s mission is to advance care for children and young people with rare and complex conditions, so they can fulfil their potential. This mission is embedded in a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, with a strong focus on delivering better, faster, and kinder treatments through multidisciplinary teamwork.
The hospital is internationally recognised as a leader in paediatric research and digital innovation, and is one of the most digitally mature hospitals in Europe. It is the only NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in the UK dedicated solely to paediatrics, with key strengths in cell and gene therapy, cardiology, neurosurgery, and digital health innovation.
As a member of ECHO, GOSH contributes expertise in highly specialized paediatric care, rare and complex diseases, clinical research, and digital health. The hospital actively participates in PHEMS, supporting the development of a European framework for paediatric health data and strengthening cross-border collaboration in data-driven paediatric healthcare.
