PHEMS is a European initiative dedicated to building a decentralised Paediatric Health Data Space (PHDS) that supports secure, privacy-preserving health data sharing and analysis across children’s hospitals in Europe. The project addresses key barriers to cross-border data collaboration, including data privacy concerns and differing interpretations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), by developing technical and governance frameworks that protect patient rights while enabling responsible data use.
Through innovative approaches to anonymization, synthetic data generation, and federated analytics, PHEMS empowers researchers, clinicians, and innovators to work with rich health data without compromising data security. The project also explores real-world clinical use cases, such as improving care pathways and predictive models, to demonstrate the value of this collaborative ecosystem for advancing paediatric healthcare.
By strengthening data infrastructure and enabling new forms of collaboration, PHEMS contributes to enhanced research, benchmarking, and innovation in paediatric care across Europe.
